A quick and easy homemade Chinese Plum Sauce that is ideal for roasted duck, as a BBQ glaze for dipping chilli prawns in. I’ve also used it as a flavoursome drizzle for a vegan/vegetarian salad (just omit the honey if making vegan) as it works well for salads with chard or radishes with peppery rocket and a sprinkle of nuts and seeds.
Chinese Plum Sauce ingredients
1 cup plum jam (ideally homemade but you can also use shop bought)
2 tbsp rice wine vinegar
2 tbsp Soy Sauce (GF)
2 tps honey (omit for vegan version)
1 shallot (or small onion), minced
1 star anise
1 tsp fresh grated ginger
1 garlic clove, minced
½ tsp crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
Combine all of the ingredients in a small saucepan and bring to a boil over medium heat. (make sure you constantly stir well while the jam melts to stop it catching on the bottom of the pan)
Reduce the heat and simmer 5 minutes. Let cool to room temperature then remove the star anise before serving.
