A Hot Brandy Toddy is one of those perfect drinks to warm the cockles of your heart and it always makes the wife feel better when she has a cold! So with the nights beginning to draw in and the thought of a long winter ahead after another poor English Summer, my mind begins has turned to the foods and drinks that provide warmth and comfort and I thought I would share with you my version of this classic winter warmer.
Ideally your Hot Toddy should be made in a toddy glass but you can always use your favourite mug – it is always best to put a splash of boiling water in first and swill it round before discarding it to warm the glass so the spices will have longer to infuse in the boiling water.
Hot Brandy Toddy Ingredients
Half a lemon (Take a slice off it and juice the rest)
1 tsp of Demerara sugar (to taste)
1 stick cinnamon
A few blades of Star Anise (or break a whole one in half)
Glug of Brandy (a 50ml measure would suffice)
Put the spices, the slice of lemon (halved) and sugar into your pre-warmed toddy glass or mug and fill 2/3rds full with boiling water and give it a good stir. Then add the juice the half lemon and the glug of brandy and top up with more boiling water.
By the time the toddy has cooled enough to drink the spices will have infused into the drink. Enjoy and if you are partaking for medicinal reasons I hope your cold/flu gets better soon 🙂
